Baltimore County Association of Senior Citizen Organizations, Inc.
From The Desk Of The President...
We fight for seniors who cannot speak for themselves. We speak for the family of seniors who have something to say. Some of us suffer from Alzheimers and dementia. We speak for some of those who may lose their home due to absence of memory. We speak for those who are being quietly abused in their own home (sometimes by family members); for Seniors in Care facilities; for Caregivers. Advocating, educating, building relationships - that’s what we do!
The Baltimore County Association of Senior Citizens Organizations, Inc. was established in 1978 long before my becoming involved. I got involved in 2019, as a result of my volunteer activities at a Senior Center.
I have seen what aging does to many of us, myself included. Volunteering as an advocate for a senior organization was nothing I saw in my future. Yet here I am trying to disseminate the many untruths being told by our politicians.
Many of these people are seniors themselves. The only difference is they have a nice retirement to look forward to.
Many like myself looked at volunteering or advocating for a cause is for other people. We get to a point in our lives and we say, I have been looking towards retirement all my life!. Now that I am here, what do I do now? Sit at home and just watch TV? Do I create a business of my own? Naw that would be too much like work. So we look around trying to find something satisfying to do. Some of us go to the senior centers just to get out of the house. That is one of the main reasons I hear. Volunteering for some organization is just out of the question.
WHY? That is how I got into this sometimes very gratifying business. After joining BCASCO I found there was so much work that had to be done. Just fighting or advocating to keep our social security is a very big reason. Why do they want to raise the retirement age, and take away from seniors the very funds we worked so hard for. Some of us end up on disability, and we need our social security just to make ends meet. It is a struggle month after month when prices on everything are going up.
Seniors are having real problems. One thing that comes to mind is the debt we create before retiring. Many of us know full well we aren't ever going to pay those credit cards off. What do we need credit for? We own our house. We drive our own cars. So what do we care about credit?
Some of us think too much! We develop dementia and Alzheimer's disease. I know, I know what you are going to say that isn't what causes these diseases.
BCASCO as an all-volunteer organization can use your professional help. We need volunteers to support this organization. We advocate, educate, and help in the legislative process. Some of us just reaching 60 years of age don't look at ourselves as a senior. Trust me you are a senior. Just look in the mirror.

Our Advocacy
Among our concerns is legislation on the county, state, and federal levels, and each year we choose our priorities. When we do take a stand, we're sure to study the issue before advocating a position. We urge our members and all citizens to keep in touch with their legislators. Currently, Social Security is a major concern, so we are urging them to contact their federal legislators.
To keep citizens connected with their state legislators, we provide transportation to Annapolis and the USM Rally during the annual General Assembly.
